Sun Tzu's "Art of War" is a masterpiece that has been studied and applied by leaders in various fields for centuries. Although this leadership book primary focus is on military strategy and tactics, its principles can be applied to many aspects of leadership.
It emphasizes the importance of careful planning, strategic thinking, and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances. Sun Tzu's insights into the nature of leadership have made the book a classic in the field of strategy and have led many to recommend this book for anyone seeking to become a better leader.
In chapter 1, sentence 1: Laying Plans[1], Sun Tzu emphasizes the importance of these five virtues that the Commander should possess: wisdom, sincerity, benevolence, courage, and strictness. These virtues are essential for effective leadership in both military and non-military contexts.
As a future police officer, wisdom is essential for effective decision-making, especially in difficult situations. I must be able to analyze complex situations and make sound judgments that uphold the law and protect the safety and well-being of the community. As what I've read, sincerity is important, and applicable in the police service. We must be transparent and honest in our communication with the public and subordinates. This helps us to build trust and credibility with the community.
Treating subordinates with kindness and respect, is important for fostering a positive work environment and reducing stress and tension among subordinates. I am the squad leader of our squad when I was a second class cadet, I treat them with kindness and respect because I believe that it will be more easier for my squad mates to approach me for any problems and concerns. Also, this can lead to better morale and job satisfaction, which can ultimately improve my performance and outcomes. It also helped me to a better squad leader to them, having the confidence that I have what it takes to be a leader in the future. Courage is also a critical virtue in police service. I must be willing to take calculated risks to protect their communities, even in the face of danger or uncertainty.
Finally, strictness or discipline is important in the police service to ensure that officers follow the law, policies and procedures. This helps to maintain order and accountability, which is crucial for effective policing. Overall, the virtues that Sun Tzu highlights in "The Art of War" can provide a framework for effective leadership in police service. By embodying these virtues, police leaders can build trust and respect among their officers and the community, make sound decisions in difficult situations, and promote a culture of accountability and professionalism.

Sun Tzu's quote "The quality of decision is like the well-timed swoop of a falcon which enables it to strike and destroy its victim" highlights the importance of timing in decision-making. As a future police officer, it is important to make decisions that are both well-informed and timely.
In my experience as a cadet officer, I've found that timing is a critical factor in decision-making. When decisions are made too late, opportunities can be lost, and problems can escalate. Conversely, when decisions are made too quickly, important information can be overlooked, and unintended consequences can arise. Therefore, the timing of a decision is just as important as the quality of the decision itself.
Like a falcon, a leader must be able to swoop in at the right moment to make a well-timed decision. This requires careful analysis and an understanding of the situation, as well as the ability to act decisively when the time is right. As a leader, I strive to cultivate this ability to recognize the right timing for decision-making, whether it's seizing an opportunity or addressing a problem before it escalates.
Effective leaders focus on problem-solving and finding solutions that benefit all stakeholders, rather than seeking to "destroy" others. In addition, it's important for leaders to consider the long-term impact of their decisions on their organization, stakeholders, and society as a whole. By keeping these considerations in mind, leaders can make well-timed decisions that are not only effective but also ethical and responsible.
